Travelwild Australia offer 5 fantastic 4WD Kimberley Tours between Broome and Darwin.
The Kimberley Region of North West Australia is amazing, at 421,000 square kilometers in size it's much larger than the UK (242 900 sq km ) and about the same size as Japan. it's got crocodiles, ancient Aboriginal rock painting and carvings and is recognized as one of the last true wilderness areas of Australia.
There is no point sitting on a bus tour if you want to see the best bits so the 9 day Kimberley Tours use 4WD vehicles and only take small groups of 9, 16 or 21 passengers. Activities include hiking, swimming, camping and exploring the vast Kimberley Region.
If you are prepared to rough it a bit, can handle a day or 2 without a shower and think sleeping out under the stars next to the campfire is a grand idea, then these tours are designed just for you.
The Rugged Style Kimberley Tour carries a maximum of only 9 passengers in a 4WD, camps at remote bush camps most nights, and is one of the most adventurous on the market. Expect to climb to top of waterfalls, travel on rough 4WD bush tracks, sleep under the stars in a swag, and go harder and further then most Kimberley Tours dare to take you.
This 4WD Kimberley Tour suits those who are fit and active and have a passion for adventure, while no upper age limit is set, participants need to be able to not only participate in the adventure activities and travel in a rough 4WD, but also join together with a small group of like minded travelers in what is an extremely social environment. This tour is not suitable for children.
The 9 day 4WD Kimberley Tours travels the full length off the Gibb River Road and visits plenty of sensational natural areas, some of the popular ones are: Windjana Gorge, Tunnel Creek, Turkey Creek, Bungle Bungles, Piccaninny Gorge, Echidna Chasm, Kununurra, Gibb River Road, El Questro Station, Emma Gorge, El Questro Gorge, Keep River National Park, Manning Gorge, Bell Gorge, Lennard River Gorge and Cable Beach (Broome).
The Adventure Style 4WD Kimberley tour still gets out into the wilderness and packs in plenty of adventure and great activities, however there are a couple of extra comforts for those who don't want to completely rough it, these include a larger, more comfortable vehicles with forward facing seats, and a preference for camping grounds with facilities like showers and toilets.
The Kimberley region is still very remote though, so it is also necessary to do some bush camping on this trip. The group sizes on these trips vary between 16 and 20 depending of the vehicle used

Kimberley Bush Camp
Camping on the Kimberley Tours varies depending on the style of tour.
Camping on the Rugged Kimberley Tours is very basic and consists of swags around the campfire. Campsites are a mixture of minimal facility campgrounds in National Parks (these mostly consist of a drop toilet only), and bush camps which have no facilities. Most sites are in remote wilderness areas. There are not many showering opportunities on tour however you will be swimming every day.
Camping on the Adventure Style Tours is a little more comfortable, with more campsite with facilities used than bush camps. Bush Camping is still a big part of the Kimberley experience and in places where campgrounds are not available, then bush camping is used. Swags around the campfire are used as bedding and tents are carried if preferred (please request at the time of booking).

Swags are a bed roll which consist of a mattress enclosed within a canvas bag, you put you sleeping bag inside the swag and put the swag on the ground to sleep, while in the swag your body is covered and your head exposed, these are a great camping product, very comfortable and warm, and there’s' nothing like falling asleep gazing at the stars! Tents are provided for as a backup however swaging is our preferred method.

First Tours in 1998
Travelwild Australia started operating tours in 1998 under the name Campwild Adventures, our fisrt tours were backpacker 4WD tours to Kangaroo Island, the tours were soon expanded and within the first year we were traveling to Alice Springs and Darwin with a 20 day expedition through central Australia. In 2005 Campwild Adventures was sold and Travelwild now groups together similar backpacker tours around Australia under the Travelwild banner, the responsibility of the daily running of the tours is left to a handful local operators who specialize in their region, local knowledge is very important when running tours if you want to get to the best spots at the best time of year, understand the weather and local fauna and flora, and this is what Travelwild offers.
All tours are small group 4WD tours and offer heaps of adventure, they all require you to rough it a bit in order to see and experience the best of the destinations offered.
